The wine market is becoming increasingly competitive. However, French expertise remains at the forefront!

The estate’s reputation, its location, its international recognition, the vintage and the winemaker’s expertise are among the criteria used to classify a wine. Indeed, the winemaker plays a very important role.

The award of the AOC designation helps to inform consumers about the ranking of the finest wines.

Internationally, there are also awards that help to establish a ranking, such as the international competition organised by the Parker Guide, created by the renowned Robert Parker, known in the industry as the ‘Wine Advocate’.

Bordeaux wines remain amongst the most renowned and sought-after in the world. A large proportion of these wines are Grands Crus Classés from the left bank of the Médoc: their reputation extends far beyond national borders and epitomises French excellence. Among the most renowned wines are Château Mouton Rothschild (Pauillac), Château Lafite Rothschild (Pauillac), Château Margaux, Château Latour (Pauillac), Pétrus (Pomerol), Château Cheval Blanc (Saint-Émilion) and Château Yquem (Sauternes). On the fine wine market, however, it is now Burgundy wines that are appreciating most in value: according to the Liv-ex 2025 ranking, the international benchmark for the collectible wine market, nearly 69 per cent of wines classified in the highest price category are Burgundies, driven in particular by the wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, some of whose vintages fetch an average of over 170,000 pounds sterling per bottle. Bordeaux retains its historic reputation and a much broader market presence, but it is Burgundy that dominates in terms of value today.

Similarly, in the Côtes du Rhône region, we find wines such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Château de Beaucastel, which together have made the south of France famous by being the first to be awarded AOC status.

Further north, towards the Lyon region, lies the famous Côte-Rôtie appellation.

Champagnes are wines that have been known and recognised throughout the ages and across countries. Dom Pérignon, Louis Roederer and Taittinger are among the most renowned.

Finally, it is impossible to discuss the great French wine-growing regions without mentioning Provence, the birthplace and centre of excellence for rosé wine. It was here, nearly 2,600 years ago, that the Phocaeans introduced vines and their ‘light-coloured wines’ when they founded Marseille — a tradition that has continued ever since. Even today, Provence holds a special place: the Côtes de Provence and Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence appellations, among the largest rosé appellation vineyards in the world, together account for over 91 per cent of rosé production, and the region remains France’s leading producer of AOC rosé by volume. Time-honoured expertise that has become the global benchmark for rosé.

Knowing how to spot a good bottle of wine in wine cellars or on the shelves is no easy task if you’re not an expert in the field. There is such a wide variety that it can sometimes be difficult to choose.

The first step is to identify the type of wine you’d like to enjoy before choosing a bottle. This can help you rule out certain options right from the start.

It’s also worth finding out about vintages. These are a good indicator, informing the consumer about the year the grapes were harvested and the quality of the wine. People often pay more attention to vintages when it comes to red wines, as some are wines for ageing that keep well and improve with time.

In fact, there are a great many guides available to help you understand the different vintages. For example, 2005 is known to be an excellent year.

Bear in mind, however, that a wine that is too young is not necessarily a bad wine. You need to give the wine time to develop, even whilst in the bottle.

Rosé wines, on the other hand, are best drunk quickly. Generally speaking, their shelf life is quite short: it does not exceed 2 to 3 years.

Tasting wine can be a key step in understanding the different aromas and identifying grape varieties and vintages. When it comes to tasting wines, some people prefer to follow the wine route, whilst others enjoy attending wine fairs.

Some estates, such as Virant, even organise tastings in their own cellars.

These experiences are often a great way to discover, taste and savour wines. They also provide an opportunity to seek advice from experts.

Several factors account for this trend. Firstly, the structural scarcity of Burgundy’s vineyards: the appellation covers just 30,000 hectares, compared with 120,000 hectares in Bordeaux, with an extremely fragmented landscape (an average of 6.5 hectares per estate) and Grands Crus accounting for just 1 per cent of total production. Some iconic climats, such as Romanée-Conti, cover just 1.63 hectares, making these wines virtually unique. Secondly, global demand continues to grow — nearly half of Burgundy’s production is exported — whilst supply remains structurally limited: according to the iDealwine barometer, Burgundy already had the highest average price per bottle in France in 2022 (€242, up 33 per cent in one year), and accounted for 38.3 per cent of the total value of auction sales for just 22 per cent of the volume.

Climatic hazards (frost, drought) further reduce yields in certain years, which exacerbates pressure on prices, as do the Hospices de Beaune auctions, which regularly set the benchmark for the market as a whole. This phenomenon is not unique to Burgundy: a similar trend can be observed in other exceptional terroirs with low production, such as the Rhône appellations of Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu.

These vineyards, planted on very steep slopes that were long neglected, are now attracting a growing audience thanks to rare and demanding grape varieties — Syrah for Côte-Rôtie, and Viognier, one of the most difficult varieties to cultivate, for Condrieu — which naturally limit yields and enhance their exceptional character.

The growing international demand for these terroir-driven wines, produced in limited quantities, thus explains the general rise in interest and value observed in both Burgundy and the northern Rhône Valley.
